MEET THERESA

Theresa is a German/American soup enthusiast who splits her time between London and Munich. Initially sharing recipes on Instagram alongside her day job, she saw sssssoupsssss take on a life of its during the pandemic. Since then, she has grown her engaged community on Instagram and Substack, and celebrated the launch of her first book, There's A Soup For That, in August 2024.

THERE'S A SOUP FOR THAT

Soup, in its many iterations, has accompanied me through most stages of life (it’s not just a phase, Mom!). Alphabet soup as a child. Chicken noodle soup at the first indication of a sniffle. Gazpacho, straight from the bottle, on a hot summer’s day. A larger-than-life bowl of pho to cure even the wobbliest of hangovers. There is something about stock that feels remedial, nourishing, magical.

Though my appreciation has been lifelong, the affair became serious when, in 2018, the landlady of my rickety downtown Manhattan walk-up informed me that, due to safety issues, the building’s gas would be cut off until further notice. Ahead of me was an icy NYC winter with no oven and no stove - just a single electric hotplate and lots of creativity.  Many an idiom comes to mind: desperate times, desperate measures. Necessity is the mother of invention. Too many cooks in the kitchen spoil the stock. What ensued was a full year of free-styling with a pot and a blender (and a lot of offers to cook for friends in their well-equipped and fully functional kitchens). And so, sssssoupsssss was born.

Anyone who claims they don't like soup either hasn't tasted a good one or is haunted by traumatic memories of gloopy stews or chunky, grey vegetables suspended in lacklustre broth. The good news is: the world of soup is incredibly rich and diverse, meaning there’s a soup out there for you no matter what your scoop is.

To those who say soup isn’t a real meal, you’re doing it wrong! It’s all about the accessories. Soup needs its sidekicks to shine: drizzles of flavourful oils and crunchy toppings, soft and doughy dipping bread, or crispy crackers. This book will walk you through them step by step.

Unlike most cookbooks, this one isn’t categorised by season, ingredient, diet, or time required - but rather by vibe and situation. Soups for when you're feeling blue, soups for when you’re under the weather, soups with hyper-seasonal ingredients, soups to satisfy your wanderlust, soups designed to impress a crowd, and soups for when you just can’t be asked

Soup can check plenty of boxes: it can be budget-friendly and simple, indulgent and luxurious, a starter or a main course, or even better, all of the above.

Whatever you’re going through at this very moment… I promise, there’s a soup for that.
